If you’re a woman working in healthcare, you’ve probably heard some version of this:
“Just push through.”
“Take care of the patients first.”
“Self-care? That’s for people who don’t have real responsibilities.”
And for a while, I bought into it. Hard.
Overworking? That was basically my whole personality. Burnout? Never heard of her (except I totally had—I was just too deep in survival mode to call it what it was).
But then I had a wake-up call.
I realized I was treating my job like a never-ending emergency... and my actual life outside of work? That was always being saved for later. For someday. For when things “calmed down.” Spoiler alert: they never do.
Here’s the cold, hard truth: the healthcare system will absolutely take as much as you’re willing to give. And if you don’t draw a line? You will eventually burn out, numb out, or both.
So I drew that line.
I stopped saying yes to every shift.
I stopped pretending like I was a robot.
I cut down to part-time hours and started reclaiming my life.
And what happened?
I became a better nurse practitioner. A better mom. A better wife. A better me.
I now have time to do things that fill me up—like spending real, present time with my family, building a business that lights me up, and still getting to pop into the ICU here and there... but on my terms.
Now, I help other women in healthcare custom-build careers that actually reflect their values and support their well-being—without giving up their ambition or income.
Because here’s the thing no one wants to admit:
The system is not going to prioritize your wellness. You have to do that for yourself.
You don’t have to stay stuck in survival mode. You don’t have to accept burnout as the price of being good at your job. And you definitely don’t have to keep living for some imaginary future when you finally get to rest.
You can take care of others without abandoning yourself.
Honestly? The time is now.
Before you break.
Before you resent your job.
Before your body or your mental health makes the decision for you.
You deserve a life that feels good on the inside—not just one that looks like you have it all together.
