If you’re a woman working in healthcare, you’ve probably heard some version of this:
“Just push through.”
“Take care of the patients first.”
“Self-care? That’s for people who don’t have real responsibilities.”
And for a while, I bought into it. Hard.
Overworking? That was basically my whole personality. Burnout? Never heard of her (except I totally had—I was just too deep in survival mode to call it what it was).
But then I had a wake-up call.
I realized I was treating my job like a never-ending emergency... and my actual life outside of work? That was always being saved for later. For someday. For when things “calmed down.” Spoiler alert: they never do.
Here’s the cold, hard truth: the healthcare system will absolutely take as much as you’re willing to give. And if you don’t draw a line? You will eventually burn out, numb out, or both.
So I drew that line.
